I've gone through a number of the postings, and attempted re-installation with almost every background process terminated. No AV software installed (I usually use ClamWin, but I uninstalled it temporarily for this troubleshooting.) I have many games (25+) installed and patched -- so I'm really reluctant to format and reinstall the OS.
