Where live albums tend to offer revved- up renditions of greatest hits packages or recent studio material, Live+ (which concludes with two new studio tracks) will occupy a unique place in Jeff Beck’s discography. Partly that’s due to instrumentation: instead of a keyboardist, the lineup includes second guitarist Nicholas Meier, which helps explain why little here resembles jazz-rock (tellingly, Beck’s fusion classics Blow by Blow and Wired are bypassed completely). Instead there’s a muscular late-60s rock and roll sound with dabs of funk and blues. Drummer Jonathan Joseph pounds the skins powerfully, Prince alumna Rhonda Smith further confirms her status as a groove master, and Jimmy Hall belts out the lead vocals. Beck, meanwhile, has never sounded raunchier than on “Loaded,” “Hammerhead,” “Big Block,” and “Where Were You.” A lyrical side emerges when paying tribute to the Beatles (“A Day in the Life”), Jimi Hendrix (“Little Wing”), and Sam Cooke (“A Change is Gonna Come”). Lately Beck’s been sneaking some John McLaughlin songs into his set lists, and his sweet and savage treatment of “You Know You Know” is exceptional—one master paying tribute to another. Sonics are clean and crisp with a strong bottom end—sounds live to me.
